Reading Like… is a new feature on my Substack where I create and share a TBR pile I think a specific character would like based on what I know about them. Whether they love reading or not, I think I can find the perfect book for them!
Who is Ginger?
Ginger is the death-obsessed older sister of Brigitte Fitzgerald. She’s angsty, angry, and against authority - the typical trademarks of a regular teenage girl. The thing that sets her apart is a local attack by a werewolf, leading to a transformation for not only Ginger, but the rest of her family & town as well.
Ginger Fitzgerald’s TBR
SUCH SHARP TEETH by Rachel Harrison
What It’s About: Told from the perspective of a girl post-attack who finds herself transforming in ways she can’t explain, this has all the makings of a fun, campy, comedic werewolf classic.
Why Ginger Would Like It: Ginger would find a lot to relate to in our main character here, as well as familiarity within the sister relationship featured as a primary focus as well.
NIGHTBITCH by Rachel Yoder
What It’s About: A stay-at-home mom starts experiencing a transformative experience when she spends her nights as a dog.
Why Ginger Would Like It: Although the themes of motherhood may be mostly lost on Ginger, the way she looks after her younger sister may stir up some related feelings. I also think the descriptions of freedom by the main character would hit home for her.
THE EYES ARE THE BEST PART by Monika Kim
What It’s About: After Ji-won’s father cheats on her mother, she finds her life, family, and own mental health unraveling in the way of bloody dreams and dark appetites.
Why Ginger Would Like It: Told from the perspective of an older sister finding a taste for… darker things, Ginger would love this darkly fun romp into family drama and eyeball morsels.
THE LOVER by Silvia Moreno Garcia
What It’s About: Sisterly jealousy, revenge, and forbidden love.
Why Ginger Would Like It: Although it’s got a bit more of a romantic lean, I think the darkness of this and the fairy tale aspects would be a great fit for Ginger’s obsession with death and scary things.
